"I know in my own life God has always had a way of putting me in my place little and sometimes big ways of reminding me of my need to depend upon him and to attend to the work of my own rebuilding from within," Cordileone told the congregation. "I would say, though, that with this 2013 black friday uggs latest episode in my life, God has outdone himself."



Cordileone, 56, replaces retiring Archbishop . The former Oakland Diocese bishop assumed his new role on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, for whom San Francisco is named.



While the mood inside the cathedral was joyous, the crowd outside was split between supporters and protesters angered by the elevation of a church conservative to the archbishop position.



Cordileone was one of the leaders in 2008's campaign for Proposition 8, which banned samesex marriage statewide. The is opposed to all homosexual black friday uggs activity, but local archbishops have reached accommodations with gays and lesbians on some issues. Cordileone was arrested in San Diego in August on a misdemeanor DUI charge. Court records show he pleaded guilty on Monday to a reduced charge of reckless driving.



The protesters included , 20, a recent transplant from rural Pennsylvania with multiple piercings and a tuft of blackandwhite hair that drooped across his face like a comma. He brandished a sign that read, "Get Equal."



"You come to bigger cities and you have guys like this acting like he's topnotch and like he can change everybody," said Clawson, a bornandraised Catholic who came out as gay at age 13. "You can't change people. I feel like I'm part of a cult when I tell people I'm Catholic."



A couple of steps away, , 20, a City College of San Francisco student and a Catholic, was in town with her family to watch a group dance and chant hymns under a banner that declared, "Defend the Christian family."



The San Francisco Archdiocese encompasses an estimated 400,000 Catholics in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties. Archdiocese spokesman has said Cordileone is familiar with San Francisco's politics and that "gay rights aren't the only concern in the archdiocese.".
