New aquatic centre to be top class Gold Coast Sport

THE Queensland Government has promised to redevelop the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre into a fivestar complex but a nofrills approach will be adopted for other Commonwealth Games facilities.

Commonwealth Games Minister Jann Stuckey yesterday committed to replace the ageing facilities at Southport in two years with a topclass pool centre when she met with Commonwealth Games Federation president Prince Imran.

The new $41 million aquatic centre will include cafe, function facilities, gymnasium, retail shop, new 10lane, 50m competition pool, and 25m pool, while the learntoswim pool and kids ugg black friday sale aquatic play area will be rebuilt.

Ms Stuckey said the quality facility would be in place for the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in 2014, and later, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"We have an absolutely RollsRoyce pool coming our way on the Gold Coast," she told journalists.

The comment was a reference to a statement made by Prince Imran when he visited the Gold Coast last year.

Asked about the State Government plans to cut the budget for the 2018 event, the Prince said: "There is no need for a RollsRoyce Games when a Toyota 2013 black friday uggs will suffice."

Yesterday, Prince Imran said he was pleased with the government plans and progress on the aquatic centre.

"Where you are able to do a bigger RollsRoyce job, well why not?" he said.

However, the government is arguing not all facilities for the Games need to be delivered at that level.

"It is a Commonwealth Games, not the Olympics," Ms Stuckey said yesterday.

"However, swimming is such a feature of the Games that this centre is going to wear that RollsRoyce tag very well."

The aquatic centre is set to close in about a month and the facility will be handed to Watpac, lead contractor for its redevelopment, on February 24.

Expressions of interest will be called soon for about 40 projects associated with the aquatic centre and Ms Stuckey yesterday encouraged Gold Coast companies to bid for the work.
